About Safeway
The privately held company is owned by Cerberus Capital, L.P, and employs over 250,000 people across its stores and supply chain. Robert L. Edwards currently serves as President & CEO.
Safeway was founded way back in 1915 by Marion Barton Skaggs, in American Falls, Idaho, after he took over his father's single supermarket. He turned the business in to a chain and took on the Safeway name in 1926. The name comes from the idea that during the depression families were struggling with the traditional method of buying groceries on credit, so they should do it the "safe way" at his stores that only accepted cash.
Safeway soon expanded across the United States and even opened up stores overseas in the UK, Australia and Germany.
Over the years the chain has gone through several corporate ownerships, but was acquired by Cerberus Capital Management in 2014, for $9.4 billion.
