1-800 Mattress was founded in 1976 by Napoleon Barragan, who was working at a furniture store at the time. He was inspired by a business called Dial-A-Steak, and decided to apply the same business model of direct marketed phone ordering to mattresses.
In the beginning the company was called Dial-A-Mattress but changed its name to 1-800 Mattress by 1994, to make use of the phone number branding. The website went live in 1999.
By 2005 they had over 300 employees and were making in excess of $100 million in revenue. In 2009 1-800-Mattress merged with Sleepy's, a standard retail outlet for mattresses.
