After securing millions in funding Zipcar acquired Seattle-based rival Flexcar in 2007, taking the company national. They went public in 2011 and have remained on the NASDAQ after being bought out by the Avis Budget Group in 2013.

You will then be sent a Zipcard that allows you to unlock participating vehicles, which can be found in cities, campuses, airports and local communities. Bookings can be for a couple of hours or the whole day at a rate of $8 to $10/hr. For some people this will work out cheaper than owning their own car.
