About Jos. A. Bank
In 1866, Charles Bank moved to Baltimore, Maryland, having emigrated from Lithuania. He started his small scale tailor business and by the 1900s had expanded to several stores and service. His grandson, Joseph A. Bank took the helm of the company in 1898 having started as a cloth cutter at 11 years old and a wholesale salesperson who traveled the South to sell pants. Joseph ended up marrying Anna Hartz, a salesperson of a rival company in 1922. They teamed up with the Anna's mother Lena Hartz. Together they expanded their business interests.
In 1940 Joseph Bank along with his son Howard, took total ownership of the company.
After 1954 when Joseph Bank passed on, his son Howard took control of the company. They had changed operations due to a lack of interest in men's tailored clothing following World War II. They cut a deal with retailer Louie's Inc., to sell their clothing lines in other outlets.
The company went public in 1994 on the NASDAQ as JOSB. They now focus mostly on their retail line having outsourced their manufacturing.
Today Joseph A. Bank makes close to $1 billion in yearly revenue and employs over 6,000 people.
